Maple-Pecan Medjool Date Rugelach
This month the Avid Backer's Challenge was the Eastern European pastry called Rugelach. Rugelach is one of my holiday staples so when the ABC Baking group invited me to bake along this month using a version by Flo Braker, I was thrilled. Although I have been making rugelach for many years now I was looking forward to this challenge for three reasons. First of all, I have never been totally happy with my dough recipe. Cheese Blintzes with Berry Sauce
I thought it would be simple to put together a nice blintz recipe to put up in time for New Year's Day brunch. But then again, somehow I forgot that I am a compulsive food nut! This included the addition of crimini mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes (which we brought from Italy, and later rehyrated then packed in olive oil and garlic), and fresh Raffetto's pappardelle.

Baked potatoes with cheese and mizeria. Cooking experiments lead me to weird places;) For some reason I thought of trying oven-baking the potatoes in a vegetable broth.After fishing them out I got rid of the broth, put the potatoes back in the casserole and spread some cheese on them.Back in the oven until the cheese melts. The dish didn't have the quality of a traditionally baked potato. It was eatable but not worth repeating.

Baked potatoes with cheese and mizeria. Cooking experiments lead me to weird places;) For some reason I thought of trying oven-baking the potatoes in a vegetable broth.After fishing them out I got rid of the broth, put the potatoes back in the casserole and spread some cheese on them.Back in the oven until the cheese melts. The dish didn't have the quality of a traditionally baked potato. It was eatable but not worth repeating.

We all request that this is what she brings when we have a family meal! :) 2- 11 oz cans mandarin oranges drained2 cups buttermilk1 pkg fudge striped cookies2 small instant vanilla pudding packages16 oz container of Cool WhipMix pdding ith buttermilk. Add Cool Whip and oranges. Stir into pudding. Break 3/4 pkg of cookies and stir into puddling. Break rest of cookies in half and put on top.

Looking for a festive holiday side dish? One my favorite winter sides is my dad's sweet and sour red cabbage. The following recipe takes that Austrian standard up a notch with the addition of apples, onions, and roasted chestnuts. So good! Pretty too. I can't wait to make it again. Braised red cabbage with chestnuts is a traditional accompaniment to roast goose, but if goose isn't on your menu it also works great alongside a pork roast. You can easily make ahead and reheat to serve
